Watercolour painting of sun casting shadows through trees in Thorpe Wood, England
ClearWatersAmalfi
Painting of rock arch on Orkney Cliffs, Scotland

My paintings are inspired by nature. The wonderful British countryside in particular, with its peaceful pastoral scenes, dramatic cliffs and ever-changing coastlines, is a frequent source of inspiration.  Trips overseas are also a rich source of material - the huge snow-capped mountains, crystal clear rivers and alpine meadows of New Zealand, or azure seas and Roman ruins in Italy. My aim is to show more than just the view, however. I want my paintings to convey a sense of time and place -  the time of day, the weather, the light, how it would feel to be there.  More than ever I am motivated to portray light and mood in my landscape paintings.

Matriarch Portrait

Portraits are also inspired by nature, of course, and I believe that a good portrait can show more of a person's personality than a photograph does. I love the many challenges of portraiture: getting a likeness, of course, but also the excitement of capturing something of the sitter's essence.
