Commissioning a Portrait

How to commission a unique portrait and how a portrait is painted (the story of a portrait)

Portrait Commissions

I regularly paint portraits to commission - indeed, almost all of my portrait work is created in this way. If you are interested in a portrait, the easiest thing to do is to give me a call and we can discuss it. To see how a portrait develops, click here.

Many of my portraits are painted entirely from photographs - either ones the client has supplied, or photographs of the subject that I have taken myself. Arranging the commission is then a simple matter of choosing the best photograph to work from and deciding on things like medium, size, and timescales. I can help you with these choices if you are unsure, and I will always quote a price before I start work.

Working from photographs is particularly important for surprise portraits of course, and also for paintings of children, who find it very difficult to sit still! It's also the most economical method, as it takes less of my time than working from sittings, and can be arranged remotely (eg via email).

Portrait from Live Sittings

I can also paint portraits entirely from sittings, or from a combination of sittings and photographs. For instance, an initial sitting would allow me to take some photographs and do some sketching. Then I might work from the photographs for a while, before suggesting another sitting or two to complete the work.

For extra reassurance, I always try to give the client the opportunity to check the painting before he or she pays for it - either as the work progresses or when it is finished. In the unlikely event that you aren't happy with some aspect of it, we can discuss possible changes. If you still aren't content with the finished picture, you will be under no obligation to pay me (with the exception of portraits completed from several sittings, where the work would be checked as it progressed).
